Wastewater Symbiosis Study Tour to Denmark
June 15–21, 2025
Turning Treatment Plants into Value Factories
CSI will host a Wastewater Symbiosis Study Tour in Denmark for public and private wastewater leaders from the Pacific Northwest this summer to explore Industrial Symbiosis.
Industrial symbiosis, pioneered in Denmark, is a ground-breaking approach to infrastructure and economic development, where one sector’s wastes - energy, water, and materials - become valuable resources for other businesses.
For many communities, wastewater treatment plants are among their most important capital assets. Denmark is showing how wastewater treatment plants can serve as great platforms for local Industrial Symbiosis innovation, creating value from 'waste'.

This tour builds on the successes of the first-of-its-kind inaugural Wastewater Symbiosis Study Tour in September 2024. Our 2024 alumni returned to the Pacific Northwest fired up and ready to implement Industrial Symbiosis solutions. Many of these projects are ongoing and continuing to partner with Danish experts to implement real world change!
A key goal of this year's study tour is to educate and inspire our delegates to translate their Danish learnings into action back at their home utilities, reshaping many millions of dollars of capital investment to realize the economic and sustainability benefits of industrial symbiosis.
